Rajasthan Hamlets & Their Eco – Friendly Houses

Most of the times the hamlets of Rajasthan more particularly in western Rajasthan desert region, are wielding almost bleak looks, which has nothing to feel surprised about it. The houses are built with what ever material is available locally and within individual’s means. Thus the houses provide eco-friendly living accommodation.

It is though small but precious possession for them. A village which is big has in it few well cemented houses or large houses comprised of long court yard and space to keep the cattle within the house belonging to a village dignitary. The cattle enclosure is mostly made of locally clay made Sun dried bricks having covering of lime plaster.

The Decorations on Facades:

The decoration of the facades is done by introducing texture styling on the façade or making some object designs using lime colors. Some of the houses façade designing reflects creativity of the women folk living in the house. There are floral patterns made at the entrance of the kitchen unit in the house.

The residents of the hamlet are very simple and their knowledge is very limited to the Sun, Moon, Winds, Rains and plants they see in their routine life, which are reflected in their art work.

Women of the hamlet move out to go to the community or when there is a pilgrimage at near by location, which also turns out as a local fair. At such occasions there is a colorful scene of mean wearing saffron or red colored turbans and women folk wearing bright colored skirts and their faces covered with veil. Some women not supporting veil have bright jewels on their foreheads.

Settlements Comprised of Multi Culture Background:

Every Rajasthan village has multi community population. There are different casts based on their nature of activities they perform and are dependent on each other for harmonious living.

There is influence of the changes taking place as result of land holding ceilings and the young persons moving out of the village living to seek jobs in towns and settle there permanently. The social fabric in the villages is still not disturbed by all what is happening around.

Domination of Rajputs at the Settlements:

The head of the village settlement in normal course is a Rajput which has lineage to the warrior race. Rajput kings have ruled various Rajasthan states few centuries back before the British Rule. The Rajputs worked for their kings by recruited in their army and were responsible for raising cavalries.

The profession of the Rajputs was basically agriculture. They had big land holdings and were employing local labor to work on their fields and take care of their cattle and the dairy produce yielded by the cattle.

Rajasthan enjoys high cattle density in the state and these village settlements are big producers of milk, which gets supplied to the nearby large cities. A good part of it is supplied to Delhi also.
